Operating principel Guarantees of Origin (GO) of Biomethane

Guarantees of Origin (GOs) are used to trace the origin of renewable energy and are issued for various products. For electricity and gas, GOs confirm that they come from renewable sources (RED II Art. 19). A system for the certification of renewable hydrogen is currently under development. These certificates will allow consumers to document the origin of their energy and count it towards their carbon footprint.

Central registers are a central system for tracking and certifying biomethane that is produced in a specific country and fed into the gas grid. It ensures that the origin and sustainability of biomethane is transparent and traceable by managing Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for produced biomethane. These certificates support compliance with environmental standards and promote trade in renewable energies by ensuring the credibility and trustworthiness of biomethane.

  • Purpose of the guarantees of origin (GOs): They are used to track the attributes of a specific megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable energy from production to consumption and to provide end customers with the origin of the energy supplied.
  • Issuance and management: GOs are issued monthly based on measured energy output from registered production facilities and managed in electronic registers. Each GO corresponds to 1 MWh of energy and contains the relevant production information.
  • Trading and transfer: GOs are tradable and can be transferred within national registries or via European hubs. They can be traded independently of the physical energy transfer.
  • Consumption and pricing: The cancellation of a GO enables the energy origin to be indicated to the end customer. A GO must be canceled within 12 months of being issued, otherwise it loses its validity. Pricing is determined by the market.

To receive GOs, a production facility must meet the following requirements:

  • Registration: The production facility must be registered in the GO register.
  • Measurement: The energy output of the plant must be measured. This data comes from transmission or distribution system operators.
  • Periodic issuance: GOs are issued monthly based on the measured energy output.
  • Information: Each GO contains information about the production facility and specific production details such as energy source and production time.
  • These requirements ensure that the origin of the energy is traceable and transparent.
