Biomethan in the EU-ETS: Reduce emissions, save costs

The use of biomethane in the EU ETS for reducing emissions is a valuable factor for an increasing number of companies that should not be neglected. However, various requirements for compliance with sustainability and the associated certification must be met.

The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is the European Union's central instrument for reducing greenhouse gases. It is based on the cap-and-trade principle, which sets an upper limit on the total amount of emissions that participating companies are allowed to emit. Companies receive or purchase emission allowances that they need to cover their emissions. Certificates that are not required can be traded. The cap is gradually lowered in order to reduce emissions and thus achieve the EU's climate targets.

This system also allows emission reductions from the use of biomethane to be taken into account under certain conditions. The most important requirements are summarized in the following section:

  • Proof of greenhouse gas reduction: Biomethane must demonstrate a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. This is done by conducting a life cycle analysis (LCA), which covers all emissions from production to use.
  • Sustainability criteria: The biomethane used must come from sustainable sources, such as residual materials, waste or certain renewable raw materials. The origin and production method must meet the requirements specified in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
  • Mass balance system: A transparent mass balance system is required to ensure that biomethane is correctly fed into the gas grid and tracked. This ensures that biomethane can be attributed to the CO₂ balances of EU ETS participants.
  • Certification and documentation: Suitable evidence (proof of sustainability certificates) must be provided to officially confirm the sustainability and emission reductions of the biomethane.

The potential for the use of biomethane within the framework of the EU ETS is estimated at 70-80 TWh for 2030 according to the plans of REPower EU from 2022.
