Nabisy: The german web-application for sustainabla biomass systems (NaBiSy)

The Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) has developed the web application Nabisy (Nachhaltige Biomasse-Systeme) to support and monitor the sustainable use of biomass. The system plays a central role in the certification of biomass used for the production of biofuels and bioliquids. The aim is to ensure sustainability along the entire value chain and guarantee compliance with legal requirements.

Nabisy is an electronic verification system designed to create, manage and monitor sustainability certificates for biofuels and bioliquids. It ensures that the use of biomass complies with the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directives, particularly with regard to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable land use.

The Nabisy system enables the involved parties, such as producers, suppliers and certification bodies, to structure the entire biomass supply chain in a transparent and traceable manner. Below are the individual steps in the process:

  • Recording the biomass: producers register the biomass produced in the system and enter all relevant information, such as the origin of the biomass, the quantity and the sustainability criteria.
  • Sustainability certification: All data provided is verified by recognized certification bodies. If the sustainability criteria are met, a sustainability certificate is issued.
  • Transfer of the certificates: The sustainability certificates are transferred through the various stages of the supply chain. Each transfer is documented in the system to ensure traceability.
  • Use of the biomass: At the end of the supply chain, the biomass is used to produce biofuels or bioliquids. The corresponding evidence is also recorded in the system.
  • Checks and inspections: The BLE carries out regular checks and inspections to ensure compliance with the sustainability criteria and to identify any irregularities.
