It is based on the cap-and-trade principle, which sets an upper limit on the total amount of emissions that participating companies are allowed to emit. Companies receive or purchase emission allowances that they need to cover their emissions. Certificates that are not required can be traded. The cap is gradually lowered in order to reduce emissions and thus achieve the EU's climate targets.<\/p>\n<p>This system also allows emission reductions from the use of biomethane to be taken into account under certain conditions. This is done by conducting a life cycle analysis (LCA), which covers all emissions from production to use.<\/li>\n<li><b>Sustainability criteria:<\/b> The biomethane used must come from sustainable sources, such as residual materials, waste or certain renewable raw materials. The origin and production method must meet the requirements specified in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).<\/li>\n<li><b>Mass balance system:<\/b> A transparent mass balance system is required to ensure that biomethane is correctly fed into the gas grid and tracked.
